The World in 360 Degrees

So we all know about Imax theaters and panoramic cameras. (My mom just loves Imax theaters by the way.) I'm not too thrilled with either one. BUT! I've found something I really like that's kinda like the two of them. A huge collection of panoramic camera images mapped to a 3-D Quicktime grid. You visit the website and in a flash you are transported to the Great Mosque in Cordoba, Spain... standing in the great hall of arches. I'm not easily impressed, but this site is beautiful.

Beauty and the Camera

Sometimes a twist of fate propels you into the spotlight. Sometimes that twist is dropping your mega-expensive Nikon digital camera into a pond. Then you rescue it, bake it in the sun, dry on your windshield and then... it works again. Kinda. This time it shoots everything in acid-wash. The drug, not the jeans.

Meet Farrell Eaves, student of famous Nat'l Geogrpahic photographer Bruce Dale. You can read the story of this miracle moment here. Check out a gallery of his work here.

Beautiful

"ECOTONOHA IS A PROJECT - TO NURTURE A VIRTUAL TREE COLLABORATIVELY, AND AT THE SAME TIME CONTRIBUTE TO THE ACTUAL ENVIRONMENT TO COPE WITH GLOBAL WARMING. AS YOU MAKE ECOTONOHA'S LEAVES, THE VIRTUAL TREE WILL GROW, AND AS ECOTONOHA GROWS, REAL TREES WILL BE PLANTED BY NEC."

Ecotonoha is a made-up word which consists of "eco" from ecology and the ancient Japanese term "kotonoha" which means word. This website is a project started in 2004 by NEC to plant trees on Australia's Kangaroo Island.

When you visit the site and leave a message on a leaf of the virtual tree, you help plant a tree. 100 messages = 1 tree NEC plants. Beautiful.

Disturbing

Youtube.com is of course a never-ending source of amusement for me. Today's selection: more dancing - this time from those crazy folks in India. Enjoy!

My Blog

You may have noticed I haven't been posting as regularly. I've been quite busy lately and haven't had the time. Sad, I know. Things will probably continue this way for a while until things slow down a bit. *sigh*

Where the hell is that dancing guy?

WheretheHellisMatt.com is a pretty entertaining lil' website. So this guy Matt becomes an internet phenomenon by dancing in different places 'round the world and then gets sponsored by chewing gum company to do it some more. Neat huh? Check out his blog about his travels. It's a look into the quirky mind of a charming geek.

Shinji-San in the Land of Indeterminate Duration

A friend introduced me to this early Flash cartoon based on Buddhist principals. It was made in 1999. How far we've come from this primitive style! Still... every now and then I need to go back and watch. The story is bizarre (but you must have noticed I like that kind of thing by now). The soundtrack is really great, too.

"Sieg Miaow"?

"Does your cat look like Adolf Hitler? Do you wake up in a cold sweat every night wondering if he's going to up and invade Poland? Does he keep putting his right paw in the air while making a noise that sounds suspiciously like "Sieg Miaow"? If so, this is the website for you."

I couldn't have said it better myself. Why don't you take a look?

Schadenfreude

I'm sure you never laugh at other people. Ever.

So I'm sure you won't be laughing at the Craig's List users who write ads, rants, and raves worthy of the Best of Craigslist.com.

You'd never laugh at stories of overheard intercourse, insect infestations, miserable co-workers, etc. Nor would you snigger at the description of vintage orange armchairs written by someone who really should be writing for the Simpsons instead of selling off furniture from their front yard.

By far this is one of the unsung gems of the internet, possibly because of the text format. But honestly, I'm glad. Some of things described are things I'd never really want to see.

And if you're feeling up to it, why not write your own 2 cents and share it with the nation.

C'mon - visit the Best-of. I promise it'll keep you busy for at least ten minutes.

PS -

schadenfreude \SHOD-n-froy-duh\, noun:
A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of others.

Engrish Locks!

Engrish refers to the grammatically incorrect variation of English often found in East Asian countries. While the term may refer to spoken English, it is more often used to describe written English, for which problems are easier to identify and publicize. Engrish has been found on everything from poorly translated signs, menus, and instruction manuals to bizarrely worded advertisements and strange t-shirt slogans.

Now that you know about Engrish, I'dlike to share one of my all-time favorite websites. You guessed it - Engrish.com. The site celebrates some of the funniest English phrases ever generated. Guaranteed to make you laugh.

Don't forget tostop by the Engrish.com store and take the experience to your own body. After all...

Obligation being Engrish Store visitation! Let's having joyful occassion- that is our wishness! Power spent to you in the world for shop need be!
